Shares of power producers rose as a rotation into defensive sectors continued.
A major rebound in cyclical sectors early in the session later appeared to be a dead-cat bounce as selling in consumer discretionary and technology sectors resumed in the afternoon.
The utilities industry group was the only one of the 11 Standard & Poor's 500 industry groups to finish in the green for the session. The utilities industry group is down about 2.7% for the year to date, compared with losses of about 10% for the technology industry group.
