Shares of technology companies rallied after better-than-expected earnings from one of the first major Silicon Valley companies to report.

Shares of Netflix surged after the streaming service added more subscribers than anticipated in the latest quarter, bringing its total above 200 million.

Other big tech companies such as Facebook, Amazon.com, Apple and Twitter picked up amid hopes for similarly strong earnings reports.

Hong Kong-listed shares of Chinese online bazaar Alibaba Group Holding rallied after its founder Jack Ma made his first public appearance in nearly three months.
