WIDER IMAGE- A year of struggle as an Afghan family builds a new life in California
For the past year, Reuters has been following Najib Mohammadi, a former interpreter for U.S. special forces in Afghanistan, who arrived in the United States days before the fall of Kabul with his wife and young children. Mohammadi has spent the year struggling to settle into his new home in Sacramento, while also becoming an unofficial resource for others, including Afghan soldiers he trained who were evacuated to the U.S. in the airlift and U.S. military interpreters stuck in Afghanistan.
We plan to use Mohammadi’s story to touch on issues such as the overwhelmed resettlement agencies since the fall of Kabul, the inequities of who got out and who didn’t, as well as the various other hurdles Afghan refugees have faced in the United States. But we will also describe some of the highlights: his relief that his three small children will grow up in safety, and his excitement about enrolling in school to continue his education.
