OTTAWA--Foreign investors in August increased their investment in Canadian securities, led by purchases of debt securities.

Nonresident investors purchased a net 26.3 billion Canadian dollars, or the equivalent of US$21.27 billion, in Canadian securities in August, Statistics Canada said Monday. In the previous month, foreigners added a slightly revised C$14.06 billion in Canadian securities.

Meanwhile, Canadian investors bought C$15.17 billion in foreign securities, after selling off C$4.69 billion in foreign securities in the previous month. The August purchases by Canadian investors were focused on foreign bonds and equities.

As a result, international transactions generated a net inflow of funds into the Canadian economy of C$11.13 billion in August.

The monthly international securities report covers portfolio transactions in equity and investment fund shares, bonds and money market instruments for both Canadian and foreign issues. This activity excludes transactions in equity and debt instruments between affiliated enterprises.
