FTSE 100 Rises as Omicron Worries Ebb; Pharma, Mining Stocks Fall

0910 GMT - The FTSE 100 index rises 0.2% in early trade to 7355.88, boosted by gains for travel and leisure stocks as evidence grows that the Omicron variant of the coronavirus is less dangerous than previous variants. This eases concerns about potential disruption to the economy via renewed restrictions, analysts say. British Airways-owner International Consolidated Airlines is the biggest riser, up 4.6%, while hotel and restaurants company Whitbread rises 3.1%. FTSE 100 gains are limited, however, due to falls in pharmaceutical stocks and heavyweight mining companies. Dechra Pharmaceuticals is the biggest faller, down 1.7%, while pharma giant GlaxoSmithKline loses 0.6%. Miners BHP and Rio Tinto fall 0.3%. U.K. stocks underperform their European peers, with the pan-European Stoxx Europe 600 index up 0.4% at 480.36. (jessica.fleetham@wsj.com)
