Shares of energy companies advanced as oil futures continued their upward march.

Crude oil futures ended above $73 a barrel in New York, the second highest close of the year, and up by roughly 50% for the year to date.

BP shares rose slightly as analysts at brokerage HSBC cut their rating on the British oil major, noting that investors are not yet convinced it can adequately fund an effort to make its business more environmentally friendly.
