Communications services companies rose after surprisingly strong housing data restored faith in the likelihood of an economic rebound.

Shares of Facebook recouped some of their recent losses, even as more companies said they would boycott the social network as an advertising platform.

Clorox said it would temporarily stop advertising on Facebook, joining a parade of other companies, including consumer-products peers Unilever and Coca-Cola, that have moved to halt ad spending on the social-media giant over how it has handled speech on its platforms. Others include Starbucks and Verizon Communications.

The popular online forum Reddit said it was banning the community "The_Donald" dedicated to President Donald Trump as part of an overhaul of its hate-speech policies.

Real-estate investors at investment firm Blackstone Group are steadily acquiring stakes in the production facilities and other real estate where companies like Netflix and Walt Disney are creating content, as reported earlier.

Cinema chain AMC Theatres will resume theatre operations at about 450 U.S. locations on Thursday, July 30, and at roughly 150 remaining locations the following week.
