World Trade Organization negotiators continue to spar over how to govern cross-border data, prompting concerns from global businesses that those principles - viewed as critical because of the widespread use of global-ecommerce spurred by the Covid-19 pandemic - won't be addressed at this year's WTO ministerial meeting.

'The ability to access technology and transfer data securely across international digital networks is of central importance to our operations, employees, customers, and supply chain partners,' including micro, small and medium enterprises, according to over 70 organizations represented in a multi-industry statement today.

'No business can conduct international trade or commerce without this ability,' they said.

The signatories include the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, Japan Machinery Center for Trade and Investment, Singapore Business Federation, Advanced Medical Technology Association, BSA | The Software Alliance and Business Council of Canada.
