MOAF Ministry of Agriculture and Forests of Bhut : Training of Trainers held on Dairy Product Processing at Samtse
A two day training of trainers on yogurt production and processing was conducted by the National Dairy Research and Development Centre (NDRDC) at the Yoeseltse Yoghurt Plant on 26 and 27 November. Participants included Dzongkhag livestock officials, geog extension staff and two representatives from the Yoeseltse Jersey Detshen farmers group.
The training provided both theoretical and practical demonstrations on basic milk testing, yoghurt processing and good manufacturing practices. In addition, the NDRDC made some recommendations on improvement of existing infrastructure to comply with the basic needs for a dairy processing plant.
The yoghurt plant with a production capacity of 500 litres/day was established by the Dzongkhag Livestock Sector through RGoB fund including infrastructure and equipment. The plant has been established on a government land registered under the sector.
Currently, the group has 18 members supplying over 100 litres of milk in a day. The plant is expected to benefit the group through product diversification thereby addressing the raw milk marketing constrains faced by them. The product will be marketed at Tashicholing, Samtse town and Phuentsholing. Based on future demand for their product, the plant intends to procure milk from other non-group members within the geog to fully utilise the production capacity of the plant.
Apart from the training, the NDRDC team visited Ugyentse Milk Processing Unit at Ugyentse and the ice cream factory at Hangay under Tashicholing dungkhag to monitor and evaluate the plants.
