Thomas F. Farrell, the longtime chief of Dominion Energy Inc. and chairman of Altria Group Inc., died Friday at age 66, a day after retiring as chairman of the utility company.

Mr. Farrell, who served as president and chief executive of Dominion from 2006 until last year, had been battling cancer, which the Richmond, Va., company said took a sudden turn in recent weeks.

Mr. Farrell had been chairman since 2007 before he retired on Thursday in a move announced on March 23. Robert Blue, who took the reins from Mr. Farrell as president and CEO, also succeeded him as chairman.

Mr. Farrell was a board member of tobacco giant Altria since 2008 and stepped in as chairman last year after Howard Willard retired. Altria last month said Mr. Farrell planned to retire from the board at the company's annual meeting, slated for May 20, and that it would name a new chairman on that date.
