April 12--Plans to open a fast food restaurant along Route 642 just outside of Milton are moving to the front burner.

The LIVIC Civil engineering firm, of Selinsgrove, has submitted plans to the West Chillisquaque Township Planning Commission for an entity called "Milton Fast Food Restaurant," for a site near Route 147, according to commission Secretary Robert F. Pardoe Jr.

The engineering firm recently initially posted on its Facebook page that a Burger King was coming, but Drew Barton, a principal in the firm, said just what kind of restaurant is coming is not final, as the franchise still needs corporate approval. The post has been removed.

"They don't want us to say what it is yet," Barton said. "The ground is secured. The franchise needs to get approval from corporate."

The planning commission is expected to take up the matter at its April 26 meeting. If the plans are approved, the township supervisors then would decide on whether to approve the project. They next meet on May 7.

"All I know is at the shopping center, where the Farmhouse Market and Tractor Supply are, when it was first approved, they put a plot out front to put a restaurant on," said Supervisor Chairman Vaughn A. Murray.

He said that probably was more than 20 years ago, before he was a supervisor. He said the restaurant developer has had no discussions yet with the supervisors.

Murray said part of the plot lies in East Chillisquaque Township. He said that township's approval likely would depend on what's in the plans.

Meanwhile, Middleburg Borough issued a zoning permit to GDK Development, of Shamokin, on Friday, for the company to bring in a Burger King along Route 522 on property formerly occupied by three homes near the Midd-West High School.

The next step is for the company to obtain a building permit, said borough administrator Elizabeth Paige. She said the company hopes to open in October.
