SSE PLC said Monday that it has asked the Irish government to facilitate the delivery of onshore and offshore wind farms in the country, including the proposed phase 2 for SSE's Arklow Bank wind project.

The FTSE-100 utility said Ireland needs to re-commit to delivering 1 gigawatt of new offshore wind by 2025 in the Irish Sea to meet the government's ambition of deploying 5 gigawatts by the end of the decade.

The company outlined several priorities to deliver a green economic recovery after the coronavirus crisis and help Ireland achieve an electricity system with net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

"SSE stands ready to invest billions of euro to deliver the low-carbon infrastructure we need, boosting our economy and creating a cleaner, greener society for generations to come", said Stephen Wheeler, SSE's managing director in Ireland.
