SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (AP) _ Nutrien Ltd. (NTR) on Tuesday reported a fourth-quarter loss of $48 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-based company said it had a loss of 8 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were 9 cents per share.

The results did not meet Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 28 cents per share.

The producer of potash and other fertilizers posted revenue of $3.44 billion in the period, which also missed Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $3.62 billion.

For the year, the company reported profit of $992 million, or $1.70 per share. Revenue was reported as $20.02 billion.

Nutrien expects full-year earnings in the range of $1.90 to $2.60 per share.

Nutrien shares have declined 14% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $41.29, a fall of 23% in the last 12 months.
