Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant Produces Its 20-Millionth Tonne of Hardware Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant (BMK AO, part of Mechel Group) produced its jubilee 20-millionth tonne of hardware. The total of 20 million tonnes of hardware is enough to load some 300,000 railcars, of a train that would be over 4,000 kilometers long - the length of Russia's territory from north to south.

The jubilee tonne was produced by the plant's largest steel wire workshop which produces the most expansive range of the plant's output from some 200 steel grades, ranging from nails and various wires to prestressing strands. The 20-millionth tonne was produced by the team of alloyed wire workshop #11's foreman Andrey Slepov, and it consisted of zinc-coated wire for mesh used in construction.

Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant has been producing hardware since 1914, when the wire and nail facility was launched on July 28. This date is considered the birthdate of the plant's wire production. The plant first produced telegraph and barbed wire as well as nails.

Over more than 100 years, the plant became Russia's pioneer in inventing, developing and mastering new promising types of hardware and know-how that were then implemented on other Russian plants. Thanks to that, the plant boasts a sweeping hardware product range.

In early years of the Great Patriotic War Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant (which then was code-named 'Pearl') had a key role in the war effort, becoming the Soviet Army's practically only supplier of unique hardware for the country's producers of tanks, aviation, artillery and ammunition.

Today the plant's product range includes a real exclusive - microwire of various sizes, including one several times thinner than a human hair, ball-bearing and spring thermally-treated wire, low-magnetic, multi-strand and stainless wire ropes, as well as polymer-coated ones.
